Gloaming Stakes
The Gloaming Stakes is a Group 3 set weights event for three-year-olds that takes place each September at Rosehill racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. The race is run over a distance of 1800 metres and worth $200,000 in prize money. The 2020 Gloaming Stakes was won by Love Tap from Street Dancer with Bucharest third.
Held on the same day as the Group 1 Golden Rose & Group 2 Research Stakes, the Gloaming Stakes is one of a number of quality feature races on the Rosehill card.

The Gloaming Stakes is a good race for up and coming three-year-old staying types during the Sydney spring racing carnival. It attracts capable gallopers heading on to the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes over 2000m on the final day of the Randwick carnival. Shadow Hero (2019), Ace High (2017), Vanbrugh (2015), Complacent (2013) and It's A Dundeel (2012) have all captured the Gloaming Stakes & Spring Champion Stakes double in recent years.
This race has proven a good guide to some of the better three-year-old staying races ahead in both Sydney and Melbourne during the spring. David Payne trained Ace High (2017) went on to taste dual group one success in multiple states after winning this race. He captured the Spring Champion Stakes here in Sydney, before heading to Melbourne to win the Group 1 Victoria Derby over 2500m at Flemington. Retrieve (2010) and Praecido (3rd in 2010) both placed in the Victoria Derby later in the spring.
After contesting this race, both Retrieve (2010) and Pendragon (2005) travelled to Melbourne to win the Group 2 Caulfield Classic (formerly the Norman Robinson Stakes) at Caulfield on Caulfield Cup.
Dual Group 1 WS Cox Plate winner So You Think (2009) won this race as a three-year-old before embarking on a very successful career both in Australia and internationally. This event is often taken out by a more than handy type, rather than a top liner. Classy types to win this race over the years include Predatory Pricer (2008), Arena (1998), Tie the Knot (1997) and Brave Warrior (1994).
Gathering (2nd in 2009) and All Black Gold (2006) ran second in the Spring Champion Stakes while Tuesday Joy (2nd in 2006) went to Flemington in the Melbourne spring to win the Gr2 Wakeful Stakes before running a top second in the Group 1 VRC Oaks.
The 2010 Gloaming Stakes placegetters all went on to fill the placings again in the Spring Champion Stakes but Erewhon (2nd in 2010) managed to turn the tables on Retrieve who finished runner-up, while Praecido dead-heated with Shootoff (8th in 2010) for third.
Shadow Hero (2019) ran third in the Listed Dulcify Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill before demolishing his rivals in this event for the Mark Newnham stable.
Recent Gloaming Stakes winners include Thinkin' Big (2018) and Ace High (2017).
