The Frances Tressady Stakes is a handy group race on the calendar for mares looking to add a black type race to their resume and the winner is more often than not simply a handy mare who may go on to race well in similar type females only events.
Occasionally the Frances Tressady Stakes race can produce a quality galloper, such as the talented Typhoon Tracy (2009), who won this race before heading to Rosehill to win the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Classic at Rosehill during the Sydney autumn racing carnival.
The Group 3 Mannerism Stakes at Caulfield in February is the typical lead-up race for this event as it is raced over the same distance and set weights & penalties conditions, although it has not proven a great guide in recent times.
Any mares contesting this race might consider stepping up in class and distance to tackle the upcoming Gr 3 Matron Stakes the following week at Flemington on Super Saturday of Racing. The Matron Stakes is raced under the same weighted conditions over 1600m, providing a natural progression in distance for those mares looking for further.
Interestingly enough, Scratchy Bottom (10th in 2015) finished last in this race before heading to Sydney at her next start to win the Group 3 Epona Stakes at Rosehill at big odds on Golden Slipper day, while Nadeem Lass (3rd in 2015) travelled to Bendigo on same day to win the Gold Bracelet at the Bendigo Turf Club's standalone Saturday raceday.
Sylvia's Mother (2020) took out the Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes over 1200m at Caulfield before scoring a stylish victory in this event for the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes stable.
