The Tristarc Stakes is a mares only race over the middle sprint distance of 1400m and generally attracts above average females on their way to the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes on AAMI Victoria Derby day or the Gr2 Matriarch Stakes on Emirates Stakes day, or any of the better quality mares races still to come.
The set weights conditions of the race means that the better mares in the race have a distinct advantage over their rivals and those females with higher average prize money and better race records are typically the ones to beat.
Generally taken out by a more than handy mare, in recent times outstanding mares More Joyous (2011) and Typhoon Tracy (2009) have both won this race.
Savatiano (2019) ran fourth in the Group 2 Blazer Stakes over 1400m at Flemington before producing the goods in quality style for the James Cummings stable.
Recent Tristarc Stakes winners include Shumookh (2018) and Global Glamour (2017).
Mares from this race will most likely continue on to other set weight mares events or one of the major 1600m races such as the Empire Rose Stakes over the carnival period. Recent Tristarc Stakes placegetters have gone on to enjoy success during the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington.
More recently, Shillelagh (2017) took on and beat the males in the Group 1 Cantala States at Flemington on Derby Day after finishing third here.
Red Tracer (2013) took out the Empire Rose Stakes at Flemington after winning the Tristarc Stakes and Fire Up Fifi (4th in 2013) ran third in the same race before travelling to Perth to run third in the Group 1 Railway Stakes at Ascot.
Sister Madly (2nd in 2011) won Gr2 Linlithgow Stakes on Group 1 Victoria Derby day and Jersey Lily (2nd in 2010) took out the Gr3 Maybe Mahal Stakes on Melbourne Cup day.
Prior to that Typhoon Tracy (2009) went on to win the the Empire Rose Stakes on Derby day, while Mimi Lebrock (2008) ran run third in the Empire Rose Stakes later that spring with Absolutelyfabulous (3rd in 2008) finishing runner-up in the same race.
Tan Tat De Lago (2nd in 2008) ran second in the Matriarch Stakes on Emirates Stakes day.
