Matriarch Stakes
The Matriarch Stakes is a Group 2 race for mares held at Flemington racecourse annually during the Melbourne spring racing carnival in November. The race is run over a distance of 2000 metres and worth $300,000 in prize money. The 2019 Matriarch Stakes was won by Oceanex from Miss Siska with Aristocratic Miss third.
Run as the 'Momentum Energy Stakes' in recent years, the Matriarch Stakes is held on Emirates Stakes day on the final day of the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival. Feature races include the Group 1 Emirates Stakes & Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic.

The Matriarch Stakes is a race for females only and attracts handy mares rather than the elite. The set weight & penalty conditions of the race favours the classier mares engaged and those gallopers with higher prize money and better strike rates are typically the ones to beat.
Typically speaking the race is not a great guide to anything in particular moving forward. Winners and placegetters may decide to go on to either the Gr2 Sandown Classic or Gr3 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown the following week, if still racing after the Flemington carnival. Interestingly enough, Lucia Valentina (2015) came via the Group 1 Caulfield Cup to win this race.
Kenedna (2018) finished unplaced in the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes over 1600m at Flemington before pulling out all stops to win this event for leading trainer Darren Weir.
