The Maybe Mahal Stakes is a Group 3 race for mares held at Flemington racecourse each year in November during the Melbourne spring racing carnival. The race is run under set weight & penalty conditions over a distance of 1400 metres and offers $200,000 in prize money. The 2019 Maybe Mahal Stakes was won by Teleplay from La Tigeresa with Sweet Scandal third.
Previously a listed race, the Maybe Mahal Stakes was upgraded to Group 3 status for the 2012/2013 season and takes place on Melbourne Cup day. The race is named in honour of classy galloper Maybe Mahal, a seven-time Group 1 winning mare for trainer Bart Cummings, and has been run as the 'Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes' in recent times.

The Maybe Mahal Stakes is a mares only event and the weighted conditions of the race lends itself to the classier females engaged. Any mares with higher prize money earnings and better race records are typically more suited to a race like this.
Most of the time a capacity field of mares will assemble to contest this race, making it a tough affair for punters to find a winner. There's always value to be had if you're prepared to do the form and find a mare ready to fire on the day at good odds.
Earlier carnival races such as the Gr2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes at Flemington or the Gr2 Tristarc Stakes at Caulfield are ideal lead up races to the Maybe Mahal Stakes as they are raced under the exact same conditions.
Many of the mares contesting this event will head off to the spelling paddock after this race, while others may head on to the Gr3 Summoned Stakes for mares during the upcoming Sandown carnival following Melbourne Cup week. Cabernet (2nd in 2012) finished runner-up in the Summoned Stakes following her second place finish in this event.
Cool Passion (2018) ran seventh in the Listed Black Pearl over 1200m at Geelong before scoring a stylish victory in this event for trainer Tomy McEvoy. The consistent mare captured the Gr3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes on Zipping Classic Day at Sandown at her next start.
Recent Maybe Mahal Stakes winners include Pedrena (2017) and Artistry (2016).
