The Summoned Stakes is the only group race for mares only on Sandown Classic day, which is the final day of group racing during the Melbourne spring racing carnival, and provides mares with their last chance to get some black type success on their resume.
A large field of gallopers will generally assemble for the Summoned Stakes and Horse Racing Info recommend you look for any mares looking to drop back in class from the stronger female only races held earlier in the carnival, as they will find this an attractive proposition.
The Gr3 Ladies Day Vase on Group 1 Thousand Guineas day at Caulfield may be worth keeping an eye on when doing the form as it is raced under similar conditions. Hi Belle (2011) managed to take out the Ladies Day Vase & Summoned Stakes double in recent times.
The weighted conditions of the race gives the more talented mares an advantage, although most of the time the field will simply be made up of more than handy types who are always competitive in these types of events.
It's worth noting that Solicit (2015) and Politeness (2014) came via the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes on Derby Day at Flemington during the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival.
I'm A Princess (2018) ran third in a BM82 race over 1000m at Morphettville Parks in Adelaide before winning this race in narrow style for trainer Tony McEvoy.
Recent Summoned Stakes winners include Long Time Ago (2017) and Silent Sedition (2016).
