The Brisbane Cup was first run in 1871 at Eagle Farm and raced over a distance of 3200m at Group 1 level until 2007, when the race distance was reduced to 2400m and the race status downgraded to a Group 2 event. Since 2009 the Brisbane Cup has been held on Stradbroke Day after previously being held on the Queen's Birthday holiday on a Monday.
Typically attracting predominantly handy local stayers, some talented interstate raiders have been successful over the years including the ill-fated Bart Cumming's galloper Viewed (2008) who went on to win the time honoured Gr1 Melbourne Cup the following spring after winning the Brisbane Cup.
Races such as the Gr1 Doomben Cup or Gr2 PJ O'Shea Stakes are typical lead up races to the Brisbane Cup and Scenic Shot (2009) managed a clean sweep of all three races when he won the Doomben Cup and PJ O'Shea Stakes on his way to winning this event.
More recently Lights Of Heaven (2012) finished runner-up in the Doomben Cup before taking out the PJ O'Shea Stakes & Brisbane Cup double. She also travelled to Melbourne the following spring to run third in the Gr1 Caulfield Cup at Caulfield.
Sixties Groove (2019) ran second in the Gr2 PJ O'Shea Stakes over 2200m at Doomben before finishing strongly to win this event in classy style for trainer Kris Lees.
Recent Brisbane Cup winners include Sedanzer (2018) and Chocante (2017).
