The WH Stocks Stakes is a Group 2 weight-for-age race for mares that takes place each September at Moonee Valley racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria during the Melbourne spring racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres and worth $300,000 in prize money. The 2020 WH Stocks Stakes was won by Mystic Journey from Perfect Jewel with One More Try third.
This race is held alongside the Group 1 AJ Moir Stakes night on AFL Grand Final eve and complements a great card on a huge weekend of racing.

The WH Stocks Stakes is a nice little mares race that provides a good lead-up to races such as the Gr2 Blazer Stakes metres on Turnbull Stakes day at Flemington or the Gr3 Tristarc Stakes at Caulfield on Caulfield Cup day. The Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes at Flemington on Derby day might also be on the agenda for the better quality mares in this race.
Generally attracting more than handy mares, some classy females have saluted in the WH Stocks Stakes over the years including Atlantic Jewel (2013), King's Rose (2011), Zarita (2009), Tuesday Joy (2008) and She's Archie (2004).
Mares only races like the Gr2 Let's Elope Stakes at Flemington provide the ideal lead-up and both I Am A Star (2018) and Don't Doubt Mamma (2016) are the most recent Let's Elope Stakes & WH Stocks Stakes double winners.
Peter Moody mare King's Rose (2011) won the Group 1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield prior to winning this event, as did the Mark Kavanagh's Atlantic Jewel (2013) two years later.
Princess Jenni (2019) ran seventh in the Let's Elope Stakes over 1400m at Flemington before proving too classy for her rivals in this event for Mornington trainer David Brideoake.
Recent WH Stocks Stakes winners include I Am A Star (2017-18) and Don't Doubt Mamma (2016).
Spring Carnival Guide
Spanish Reef (4th in 2019) and I Am A Star (2018) both captured the Group 3 Ladies Day Vase at Caulfield at their next start.
Atlantic Jewel (2013) went on to run second in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield before winning the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes at the same track. Oasis Bloom (2nd in 2013) managed to finish runner-up Gr2 Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield.
Spirit Song (2nd in 2012) had a solid spring campaign after running second in this event, finishing second in the Group 1 Tootak Handicap at Caulfield and third in the Gr3 Inglis Mile at Moonee Valley.
King's Rose (2011) ran second in both the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield and the Group 1 Emirates Stakes at Flemington, while Pinker Pinker (2nd in 2011) finished runner-up in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap at Randwick in Sydney before winning the Group 1 WS Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.
The WH Stocks Stakes can quite often unearth a potential star mare of the spring.
