The Moonee Valley Vase is commonly used for emerging three-year-old stayers as a lead up race to the Group 1 Moonee Valley Victoria Derby the following week at Flemington. The Derby is held on the first day of the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Run over a distance of 2040 metres, the same distance as the WS Cox Plate, the Moonee Valley Vase typically assembles three-year-olds that may have previously tackled the Gr2 Stutt Stakes at Moonee Valley or the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas at Caulfield, both over 1600m. Others may come via the Gr3 Caulfield Classic held the previous week at Caulfield over 2000m. Whobegotyou (2008), Helenus (2006), Diatribe (1999) and Blevic (1994) all won the Stutt Stakes before going on to win this event the same year.
Three-year-olds who perform well in this race will generally continue on to the Victoria Derby the following week and the Moonee Valley Vase is the last staying test for 3yo gallopers before the Derby. Efficient (2006), Plastered (2004), Helenus (2002), Blevic (1994) and Raveneaux (1986) all won this race before going on to win the AAMI Victoria Derby.
Any fillies capable of taking on the males may consider this race on their way to the Group 1 VRC Oaks at Flemington. Jameka (2015) was the last filly to claim the Moonee Valley Vase & VRC Oaks double. Occasionally, the fillies only Group 1 Thousand Guineas, over 1600m at Caulfield, can provide a classy type who can figure in the finish here. Smart galloper Aloisia (2017) is the most recent winner of the Thousand Guineas & Moonee Valley Vase double.
Soul Patch (2019) ran eighth in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas over 1600m at Caulfield before scoring an outstanding victory in this event for the Ken Keys stable at Cranbourne.
Recent Moonee Valley Vase winners include Stars Of Carrum (2018) and Aloisia (2017).
The Ciaron Maher trained Jameka (2015) took out the VRC Oaks in stylish fashion after winning this event while Tarzino (3rd in 2015) scored an outstanding victory in the AAMI Victoria Derby following his third placing in the Moonee Valley Vase.
In recent times, Super Cool (2012) finished runner-up in the AAMI Victoria Derby while Lion Tamer (2nd in 2010) won the Derby after taking out this race. Rekindled Interest (2010) finished fifth in the Derby.
Extra Zero (5th in 2009) went on to run second in the Victoria Derby at his next start and Viking Legend (3rd in 2009) also ran third in the Derby.
Whobegotyou (2008) won both the Stutt Stakes and Caulfield Guineas before winning this race and he then ran second in the AAMI Victoria Derby the following week.
