The Champagne Classic is a Group 2 race for two-year-olds held each May at Doomben racecourse in Brisbane, Queensland. The race is run over a distance of 1200 metres under set weight conditions and worth $175,000 in prize money. The 2020 Champagne Classic was won by Rothfire from second place dead-heaters Czarson and Strasbourg.
Taking place alongside the Group 1 Doomben 10,000, the Champagne Classic is a good quality 2yo race during the Brisbane winter racing carnival in Queensland.

The Champagne Classic is raced over 1200 for two-year-old gallopers and the set weight conditions cater for the better horses engaged in the race. Some talented gallopers have saluted in this event including Gold Edition (2006), Lovely Jubly (2002), Staging (1997), Flavour(1996) and Chief De Beers (1994).
Two-year-olds contesting this race will most likely head to the Gr2 Sires Produce Stakes over 1400m in a couple of week's time at Eagle Farm, while those youngsters looking for more distance will likely tackle the Gr1 The TJ Smith over 1600m at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Day towards the end of the carnival. Look To The Stars (unp in 2015) won the Sires Produce Stakes at her next start after finishing unplaced in the Champagne Classic.
A race such as the Gr3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic is the perfect lead up event to the Champagne Classic and classy gallopers Sizzling (2012) & Gold Edition (2006) are the most recent horses to claim the Ken Russell Memorial Classic & Champagne Classic double.
Sizzling (2012) and Pressday (2010) both claimed the Champagne Classic, Sires Produce Stakes & The TJ Smith treble, capturing the two-year-old triple crown in the process. It's worth noting the first three placegetters in the 2012 Champagne Classic, Sizzling, Academus and Dances On Stars, all managed to finish in the same order in the Sires Produce Stakes at their following start.
Dubious (2019) finished unplaced in the Gr1 Golden Slipper Stakes over 1200m at Rosehill in Sydney before heading north to Brisbane to win this event in easy fashion for the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace stable.
