Golden Slipper Stakes
The Golden Slipper Stakes is a Group 1 race for two-year-olds held annually in March at Rosehill racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. The race is run over a distance of 1200 metres under set weight conditions and is worth $3,500,000 in prize money. The 2020 Golden Slipper Stakes was won by Farnan from Away Game with Mamaragan third.
The Golden Slipper Stakes was first run in 1957 with prize money of 20,000 pounds and it has grown to become the world's richest race for two-year-old thoroughbreds and Sydney's showpiece event of the Sydney autumn racing carnival for two-year-olds.
Slipper day is the biggest race day of the Rosehill autumn carnival and the three-day Golden Slipper Festival over three consecutive Saturdays provides the perfect lead in to the two-day $18 Million The Championships the following week. The Group 1 Ranvet Stakes and Group 1 George Ryder Stakes take place alongside the Golden Slipper Stakes.

The Golden Slipper Stakes is the richest race for two-year-olds in Australia and is the premier event for youngsters in this country. There are a number of Slipper lead up races for two-year-olds at Rosehill including the Group 2 Reisling Stakes & Group 2 Magic Night Stakes for fillies and the Group 2 Todman Stakes & Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes for colts & geldings.
These races provide Golden Slipper ballot exemptions for winners as well as valuable race experience over the course & distance for any two-year-olds planning to run in this $3,500,000 race. The Golden Slipper has an illustrious history and always attracts the very best 2yo gallopers each and every year. Vancouver (2015) claimed the Todman Stakes & Golden Slipper when he scored an exciting victory in this event from a wide gate.
More often than not winners of this race will go on to be stars of the turf, and some of the classier two-year-olds to win a Slipper recently include Pierro (2012), Sepoy (2011), Miss Finland (2006), Belle de Jour (2000), Guineas (1997), Bint Marscay (1993), and the champion 2yo of his time, Todman, who won the inaugrual running of the race in 1957.
More recently, Yankee Rose (2nd in 2016) and Guelph (4th in 2013) went on to win the ATC Sires Produce Stakes after running in the Golden Slipper, while talented Gai Waterhouse colt Pierro (2012) claimed the Sydney autumn 2yo triple crown by winning the Group 1 ATC Sires Produce Stakes & Group 1 ATC Champagne Stakes at Randwick after taking out the Golden Slipper.
The newly upgraded Group 3 Black Opal Stakes should prove a good lead-up to the Golden Slipper in coming years as it is raced over the same distance two weeks earlier, however Catbird (1999) is the only two-year-old to claim the Black Opal Stakes & Golden Slipper Stakes double in its history.
Kiamichi (2019) took out the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes over 1200m at Rosehill before scoring an upset victory in this event for the James Cummings stable.
Recent Golden Slipper Stakes winners include Estijaab (2018) and She Will Reign (2017).
