Winterbottom Stakes
The Winterbottom Stakes is a Group 1 weight-for-age race held annually each November at Ascot racecourse in Perth, Western Australia during the Perth summer racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1200 metres and worth $1,000,000 in prize money. The 2019 Winterbottom Stakes was won by Hey Doc from Vital Silver with Rock Magic third.
Upgraded from Group 2 to Group 1 status in the 2011/2012 racing season, the Winterbottom Stakes takes place one week following the Group 1 Railway Stakes during the Festival of Perth Racing in November. The feature sprint is held one week before the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic in December.

The Winterbottom Stakes is the premier sprint event of the Perth summer racing carnival and attracts good horses to make it a high standard race for this time of year. Who could forget the 2008 running of the race when champion gallopers Takeover Target and Apache Cat battled it out down the Ascot straight in one of the great clashes of the modern era.
Earlier Perth carnival races such as the Gr2 Lee Steere Stakes and Gr3 Colonel Reeves Stakes are good lead up sprint races to this event and horses from this race may head on to the upcoming A.J. Scahill Stakes also at weight-for-age at the same track.
In recent times Watermans Bay (2nd in 2014 & 2015), Power Princess (2nd in 2012) and Grand Nirvana (3rd in 2011) have gone on to score good wins in the AJ Scahill Stakes after placing in the Winterbottom Stakes, with Watermans Bay winning in consecutive years.
Star Queensland sprinter Buffering (2013) won the Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic at Flemington during the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington in Victoria before heading to Perth to win this the Winterbottom Stakes. He returned two years later to win the race for a second time.
Voodoo Lad (2018) finished unplaced in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes over 1200m at Moonee Valley racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria, before heading to Perth to win this event in impressive style for leading Victorian trainer Darren Weir.
Recent Winterbottom Stakes winners include Voodoo Lad (2017) and Takedown (2016).
