Summer Cup
The Summer Cup is a Group 3 open handicap that takes place each year on Boxing Day at Randwick racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales over the summer period in December. The race is run over a distance of 2000 metres and worth $160,000 in prize money. The 2019 Summer Cup was won by Luvaluva from Black On Gold with Taikomochi third.
Held on Boxing Day, a couple of weeks after the Gr2 Villiers Stakes at the same track, these two races are the predominant group events held during the festive period and the Summer Cup is the final group race of the year in Sydney.

The Summer Cup is a middle distance event for stayers run the day after Christmas Day and is the main distance race held during the summer in Sydney. The race generally tends to attract a handy field of predominantly local stayers who are not typically anything special, although it's worth noting that the great miler Super Impose managed to win this event in 1988.
Horses who contested the Villiers Stakes the week before may consider going on to tackle this race and Aqua D'Amore (2005) was the last galloper to score the Villiers Stakes & Summer Cup double in the same year. Traditionally run over 2400m, the Summer Cup has been run over 2000m since 2013, making the Villiers the ideal lead up race.
Another race to consider when doing the Summer Cup form is the Gr3 Festival Stakes held in early December at Randwick. Of late, both Mighty Lucky (2015) and I'm Imposing (2014) won the Festival Stakes & Summer Cup double after contesting the Villiers Stakes beforehand.
Luvaluva (2019) ran sixth in The Gong over 1600m at Kembla Grange before scoring an easy victory in this event for Randwick trainer John Sargent.
