Southern Cross Stakes
The Southern Cross Stakes is a Group 3 Quality Handicap race held annually each February at Randwick racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. The race is run over a distance of 1200 metres and is worth $150,000 in prize money. The 2020 Southern Cross Stakes was won by Special Reward from Cascadian with Jungle Edge third.
Formerly known as the 'Frederick Clissold Stakes', this race became the 'Southern Cross Stakes' in 2009 and takes place on Group 2 Apollo Stakes day.

The Southern Cross Stakes is a quality handicap event that tends to attract above average sprinting types rather than the topliners, as recent history shows. Occasionally a high quality type may tackle this race and top class gallopers Terravista (2014), Danewin (1996) and Joanne (1991) have all won this event. Le Romain (2017) went on to win the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes at Randwick after taking out the Southern Cross Stakes.
The natural progression for sprinters contesting this race is the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup at Warwick Farm on Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes day in March, as it is raced under similar conditions but rises an extra 100 metres in distance. Dreamscape (2nd in 2010) went on to win the Liverpool City Cup after finishing second in this event.
Special Reward (2020) ran second to Southern Lad over 1200m at Randwick before scoring a solid victory in this event for Newcastle trainer Kris Lees. The Demerit gelding captured the Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket Hcp at Newcastle at his next start.
Recent Southern Cross Stakes winners include Eckstein (2019) and Kaepernick (2018).
