The Edward Manifold Stakes is held at the spacious Flemington race track and generally sees the better performed fillies of the spring contest this race on their way to the Group 1 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield in around ten days time.
In recent times Amphitrite (2018), Gallica (2008), Alinghi (2004), Special Harmony (2003), Inaflury (1998), Azzurro (1992), Richfield Lady (1991) and Riverina Charm (1988) have completed the Edward Manifold Stakes & Thousand Guineas double.
The prize money increase of the Gr3 Caulfield Classic on Caulfield Cup day makes it an attractive proposition for any capable fillies contesting this race. The Edward Manifold Stakes has produced the first two Caulfield Classic winners in Sacred Eye (2nd in 2015) and Fontein Ruby (2014)
The race has been won by some top class three-year-olds such as Alinghi (2004) and Special Harmony (2003), but most times the winner is simply an above average filly who follows the familiar 3yo filly path to the Thousand Guineas, Wakeful Stakes and VRC Oaks.
Moonlight Maid (2019) ran fourth in a 3YO Fillies BM70 race over 1600m at bendigo before storming home to win this race for popular Ballarat trainer Mitch Freedman.
Recent Edward Manifold Stakes winners include Amphitrite (2018) and Bring Me Roses (2017).
Spring Carnival Guide
Fascino (2nd in 2019) dead-heated with La Falaise in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes at Flemington after contesting this event.
Amphitrite (2018) and Verry Elleegant (3rd in 2018) headed to Caulfield at their next start to capture the Group 1 Thousand Guineas and Gr3 Ethereal Stakes respectively.
After running unplaced in this event Eleonora (11th in 2016) headed to Caulfield at her next start to win the Ethereal Stakes on Caulfield Cup Day.
Sacred Eye (2nd in 2015) and Fontein Ruby (2014) both took out the Caulfield Classic at Caulfield after winning the Edward Manifold Stakes, while My Poppette (3rd in 2015) won the Gr2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic at her next start.
Commanding Jewel (3rd in 2012) claimed the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield and Mosheen (2011) captured the VRC Oaks at Flemington.
Brazilian Pulse (2010) ran third in the Thousand Guineas at Caufield before taking out the Wakeful Stakes and VRC Oaks double at Flemington during the the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Majestic Music (2009) finished runner-up in the Gr2 Sandown Guineas at Sandown in November and Fomalite (2nd in 2009) ran second in the Wakeful Stakes at Flemington.
Gallica (2008) went on to win the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield, as did Serious Speed (2nd in 2007) who also finished second in the VRC Oaks at Flemington.
