Widden Stakes Preview
The Widden Stakes is a Group 3 event for two-year-old Fillies held in late January or early February each year at Rosehill racecourse Sydney, New South Wales during the Sydney autumn racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1100 metres under set weight plus penalties conditions and is worth $150,000 in prize money. The 2020 Widden Stakes was won by Away Game from Centimental with Philizzy third.
Previously a listed race, the Widden Stakes was upgraded to a Group 3 event for the 2013/2014 racing season and is held on the same day as the Group 2 Expressway Stakes.

The Widden Stakes is the first group race of the autumn for two-year-old fillies and the set weights & penalty conditions give a clear advantage to the classier youngsters engaged, especially those 2yo gallopers who have already raced and shown proven ability.
History shows that the more talented gallopers will prove hardest to beat and the Widden Stakes provides the ideal lead up event to upcoming 2yo feature races such as the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes at Rosehill or the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes at Randwick. Mossfun (2014) went on to claim the Widden Stakes & Sliver Slipper Stakes double after winning this event.
Some very smart two-year-olds have won this race over the years including Overreach (2013), Horizons (2009), Churchill Downs (2006) and Econsul (2004), while Mossfun (2014) resumed from a spell to win this race before going on to win the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes in April.
Away Game (2020) captured the Magic Millions 2YO Classic over 1200m at the Gold Coast racecourse in Queensland before showing her rivals a clean pair of heels to win this event for the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace stable.
Recent Widden Stakes winners include Amercement (2019) and Fiesta (2018).
