Guy Walter Stakes
The Guy Walter Stakes is a Group 2 race for mares only that generally takes place in late February or early March at Randwick racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales during the Sydney autumn racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1400 metres under set weight & penalty conditions and has prize money of $200,000. The 2020 Guy Walter Stakes was won by Dawn Dawn from Sweet Deal with Pohutukawa third.
Upgraded to Group 3 status for the 2013/2014 racing season, and then to Group 2 for the 2015/2016 season, the Guy Walter Stakes is held on the same day as the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes and Group 2 Surround Stakes.
Formerly raced as the Wiggle Stakes, the race was renamed the Guy Walter Stakes in 2014 in honour of popular Sydney trainer Guy Walter, who passed away suddenly in May of that year.

The Guy Walter Stakes is a mares only race that typically assembles a smart field of females with the classier types hard to beat due to the weighted conditions of the race. The Group 2 Breeders Classic is generally the best guide to this race and both Catkins (2014) &Steps In Time (2012-13) have taken out the Breeders Classic & Guy Walter Stakes double for the past three years.
