CF Orr Stakes
The CF Orr Stakes is a Group 1 Weight-for-age race held in February each year at Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria. This race is run over a distance of 1400 metres with prize money of $500,000. The 2020 CF Orr Stakes was won by Alabama Express from Fierce Impact with Kings Will Dream third.
CF Orr Stakes day is the Melbourne Racing Club's second biggest race day of the Melbourne autumn racing carnival, second behind Blue Diamond Stakes day, which takes place two weeks later at the same track.

The CF Orr Stakes is a quality weight-for-age race that always attracts well above average gallopers. Many top class horses have etched their name on the honour roll winner's list over the years, including champion mares Black Caviar (2012) and Typhoon Tracy (2009-10).
Other stars to win the CF Orr Stakes include All Too Hard (2013), El Segundo (2007), Lonhro (2004), Redoute's Choice (2000), Saintly (1997), and three-time winner Vo Rogue (1988-90), to show the quality of horses saluting in this event.
Classy three-year-old Alabama Express (2020) became just the seventh three-year-old to win the CF Orr Stakes, when he defeated Fierce Impact in an exciting edition. The colt's win came twenty years after the slashing victory of his sire, champion galloper and stallion Redoute's Choice.
The Group 2 Australia Stakes over 1200m at Moonee Valley in January is a good lead up race to the CF Orr Stakes. The step up to 1400m of this race provides a natural progression, and it also suits those gallopers aiming to contest upcoming longer races such as the Group 2 St George Stakes over 1800m at Caulfield.
Any capable three-year-olds contesting the CF Orr Stakes will generally head on to the Group 1 Australian Guineas at Flemington in March. Cox Plate winner Shamus Award (3rd in 2014) went on to win the Australian Guineas after running third in this race.
Alabama Express (2020) took out a 3YO Handicap race over 1100m at Flemington before producing a slashing late run to win this event in quality style for trainer Michael Moroney.
