The Blue Diamond Prelude C&G is an 1100 race for two-year-old colts & geldings during the Melbourne autumn racing carnival. It serves as the ideal lead up race to the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes which takes place two weeks later at the same track.
Some very talented horses have won this race over the years, including Sepoy (2011), Bel Esprit (2002), Lonhro (2001), Flying Spur (1995) and Danzero (1994). The level weights playing field advantages the better two-year-old gallopers engaged, as evidenced by the winner's honour role.
The Colts & Geldings Prelude is held on the same day as the female version of the race, which is the Blue Diamond Prelude - Fillies.
Classy sprinter Sepoy (2011) is the last galloper to win the Blue Diamond Colts & Geldings Prelude and Blue Diamond Stakes double. Sepoy travelled to Sydney later that autumn to capture the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill, completing the Blue Diamond & Golden Slipper double in the process.
Hanseatic (2020) took out the Listed Blue Diamond Preview for colts & geldings over 1000m at Caulfield before producing an outstanding finish to win this event for the Anthony Freedman stable.
Recent Blue Diamond Prelude C&G winners include I Am Immortal (2019) and Written By (2018).
