The ATC Carbine Club Stakes tends to attract those three-year-old gallopers who may not be up to better quality 3yo events held during the carnival such as the Group 1 ATC Derby or Group 1 ATC Oaks and the race generally assembles a field of more than handy types.
Good types such as Le Zagaletta (1999), Juggler (1995) and Golden Sword (1993) have managed to claim victory over the years but the race itself tends to produce better than average types rather than any superstars of the turf.
A race like the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes at Rosehill provides a good lead-up race to this event, although the Phar Lap is run at level weights whereas this event is run under set weight + penalty conditions, favouring the better performed horses engaged. Toydini (2013) managed to take out the Phar Lap Stakes & ATC Carbine Club Stakes double.
The Group 3 Frank Packer Plate may be next on the agenda for horses contesting this race and in recent times He's Our Rokki (2016), Hi World (2015) and Fat Al (2012) have all taken out the Carbine Club Stakes & Frank Packer Plate double.
Ringerdingding (2019) ran seventh in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill before finishing strongly to win this event in classy style for the Chris Waller stable.
